New Holland Police Chief Ralph Sprecher, who investigated, said Nungesser was struck about 8:30 p.m. Thursday by a car operated by Mrs. Barbara Ann Shaub, 31, of 146 E. Main Brownstown. Sprecher said Nungesser apparently walked out from the east side of Custer Avenue into the path of Mrs.

Shaubs car, which was southbound. The chief said that when he arrived at the scene Nungesser was conscious and lying in the New Holland Ambulance. I asked him if he was Mr. Nungesser, and he said, Yes, remarked Sprecher. Sprecher said it appeared Nungesser was attempting to cross the street to his home when struck by the Shaub vehicle. BANANAS FREE WITH A 3.00 FRUIT AND VEGETABLE BILL BOSTON (AP) Franklin Delano Roosevelts secret code, used in his diaries at the turn of the century, apparently is no longer a secret.

Three persons in the Boston area, working independently, substituted vowels for numbers, added missing characters to upper case consonants and decided that the future president wrote in code in Groton, on Nov. 22, 1903: After lunch I have a never to be forgotten walk to the river with my darling. FUTURE WIFE Dr. Nona Ferdon, an FDR researcher who discovered the code some 18 months ago, feels the darling was Roosevelts future wife, Eleanor, and that he could have broached the subject of his love on that day." When Dr. Ferdon discovered four coded entries in the diaries, she showed them to a number of cryptographers, Roosevelt experts and others, but none translated them.

Newspaper accounts of one coded entry, with illustrations of the code, appeared in newspapers earlier this week.
